Rare Photos of Ataturk’s Funeral Ceremony Exhibited Virtually
As Türkiye commemorates its great leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Türkiye, on the 84th anniversary of his death, a scrapbook about the funeral ceremony is set to be exhibited online.
After the two-year restoration of the album “The Funeral Ceremony of Our Eternal Leader Ataturk in Istanbul and Ankara” by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the album will be made available for virtual tours on the website of the National Library. The funeral album consists of photographs taken during the funerals held in Istanbul and Ankara
As part of the work carried out at the National Library’s Restoration and Conservation Laboratory, the writing on the binding and the cover of the album have been retouched, the supporting pages have been changed and the photographs have been repaired.
A virtual exhibition has been prepared on the National Library’s website for the album consisting of 800 photographs of Atatürk’s last journey.
Ali Odabaş, Director General of Libraries and Publications at the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, informed Anadolu Agency (AA) about the study and said that they want to make visible a very valuable album on the occasion of the 84th anniversary of the death of the great leader.
Speaking to a correspondent from Anadolu Agency (AA), Ali Odabaş said, “Some of the photos were worn and damaged. The surface of the album was repaired and the backing papers were changed for two years. We will display the album in a virtual exhibition and make it accessible on the site in the coming days. This precious album begins with the announcement of Atatürk’s death by Anadolu Agency on November 10, 1938.”
“The album continues with the frames of November 16, when the catafalque was placed in the Dolmabahçe Palace, November 19, when his body was taken to Izmit with the battleship Yavuz, and from there to Ankara by the train that Atatürk used in his And on November 20 he was welcomed by both the public and state officials.This is an album covering the period until his transfer to his temporary grave at the Museum of Ethnography on November 21. This is a pretty valuable album.”
“The Funeral Ceremony of Our Eternal Leader Atatürk in Istanbul and Ankara Album” also records the Turkish people’s mourning moments over Atatürk’s death and the expression of respect made by people from different parts of the Turkey and the world.
