‘Don’t @ me’: Twitter is experimenting with unmarking users from tweets

Twitter aannounced on Thursday that it is implementing a pilot program called “Unmentioning,” which will allow users to untag themselves from other people’s tweets.
The platform in a tweet described the feature as “a way to help you protect your peace and opt out of conversations.” Only certain users have access to it now, and even then they can only detach via desktop.
“Control the conversations you’re mentioned in,” Twitter’s explanation reads. “Use the actions menu – those three little dots to detach and leave a conversation.”

Facebook and Instagram, both owned by Meta, already offer users the ability to opt out of posts and images. Twitter allows users to mute conversations they’re tagged in so they don’t receive notifications, but those conversations remain linked to their accounts.
“This is awesome and will help so many people who are experiencing abuse,” tweeted author Nina Jankowicz.
scientific medicine editor David Gorski called it “something Twitter should have done a long time ago.”
“That’s great, now let’s turn off quote tweets,” wrote journalist Taylor Lorenz.
“This is so stupid,” tweeted writer Meecham Whitson Meriweather. “Sometimes people need to be dragged!”
Recently, Tesla CEO Elon Musk bought over 9% of the platform’s shares. Musk then joined Twitter’s board.
