Delhi Police announced on Friday that they would start sending notices to social media entities in connection with cases they had registered against 31 people, including AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi and controversial priest Yati Narsinghanand, for allegedly spreading hatred and hurting religious feelings.

Former BJP Delhi media unit chief Naveen Kumar Jindal, who was expelled from the party for alleged remarks against the Prophet Muhammad, and journalist Saba Naqvi, are among the 31 people named in the FIR.

Another case has been filed against former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma on similar charges.

The two FIRs were recorded on Wednesday after an analysis of their social media content, police said.

“We will soon begin sending notices to social media entities as part of the investigation of the cases. Further investigation will be conducted accordingly,” a senior police officer said.

“The cases were registered against those who posted and shared messages against the maintenance of public peace and incited people on the basis of dividing lines,” the officer said.

The 31 people were sentenced to Articles 153 (gratuitous provocation with intent to cause a riot), 295 (injuring or defiling a place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class) and 505 ( statements leading to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code.

Protests erupted in several states after Friday prayers with dozens of people condemning the controversial remarks against the Prophet.
