The Ithaca Voice, the go-to source for Ithaca news, is looking for a full-time Editor-in-Chief to guide our newsroom and help with daily coverage of events in the city of Ithaca, New York and surrounding areas.

Founded in June 2014, The Ithaca Voice’s mission is to enhance civic and political understanding in Ithaca and Tompkins County by publishing and supporting in-depth, educational, rigorous, timely and ethical journalism that all residents can access. free online.

The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for all editorial content published on The Ithaca Voice website. This person needs to be quick to spot stories important to The Voice audiences and work with our small team of reporters to get that news out quickly and in an engaging way. Editor-in-chief assigns and writes news articles, works with staff, interns and freelancers to develop articles, edits articles for content and copy, and publishes articles on website and social media . The editor should have a solid knowledge of local news, an attentive ear to the community, and a vision for the daily, weekly and long-term news coverage of the organization. This person will also supervise two journalists and a small group of freelancers, guiding them to success in achieving their coverage goals. Together with the rest of the Voice team, the Editor-in-Chief will help chart the course for our business and our long-term coverage.

In this Ithaca-based role, the General Assignment Rapporteur will be primarily responsible for ensuring that the Voice stays current with stories relating to Ithaca’s government, economy, crime and courts, education, health and other issues of local concern. The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for all editorial content published on The voice of Ithaca website, so that person should be quick to spot stories that are important to The Voice audiences and work with our small team of reporters to get that news out quickly and in an engaging way.

The Editor-in-Chief assigns and writes news articles and works with staff, interns and freelancers to develop, edit and ultimately publish articles to the website and social media. The editor should have a solid knowledge of local news, an attentive ear to the community, and a vision for the daily, weekly and long-term news coverage of the organization. Work with the rest of the Voice‘s team, the editor will help chart the course for our business and our long-term coverage.

The perfect fit for this role is unfazed in breaking news situations and should be adept at assigning, editing and sometimes writing news articles quickly and with an eye for accuracy and fairness. This editor should identify important stories, deploy the necessary resources strategically, and work transparently with different team members in the organization to deliver reports that match the story. Journalists will depend on this editor for advice on the latest news and corporate responsibility-driven politics, policies and coverage.

The editor’s duties include:

  • Overseeing news coverage, including article attribution and editing, social media posting and, occasionally, news article writing
  • Online editing of tomorrow’s and longer-term stories
  • Supervise and maintain a small team of journalists, freelancers and interns
  • Modification of others Ithaca Voice content, including newsletters, press releases and marketing materials
  • Occasional work in the evenings, weekends and public holidays and change of general assignment according to current events.

Publisher’s diploma:

  • A BA / BS degree and 2-3+ years of relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
  • Previous experience leading small teams to achieve common reporting goals
  • Impeccable reporting and writing skills with a solid understanding of the AP style
  • Good knowledge of journalistic ethics and defamation law and concern for adherence to best journalism practices
  • Ability to motivate and coach journalists, interns and freelancers of all experience levels
  • Previous experience with content management systems including WordPress and social media platforms

Experience and in-depth knowledge of the entire Ithaca landscape, Ithaca politics and government is preferred but not required. Willingness to learn is mandatory. Much like the ability to approach missions with creativity, a keen eye for detail, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, to make decisions under pressure and to develop relationships with key stakeholders, voters, members. community and other Ithaca Voice staff.

Place

This position is based in Ithaca, New York. The Ithaca Voice office is located in downtown Ithaca, a short walk from the Ithaca Commons, City Hall, Tompkins County Courthouse and County Legislature.

Compensation

Salary for this position starts between $ 40,000 and $ 43,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
