The fellowships are based at the Center for Health Services Studies (CHSS), a center of research excellence within the University of Kent’s Division of Law, Society and Social Justice. CHSS undertakes high quality research on a wide range of health systems and health services issues at local, national and international levels, including supporting and advising public health personnel to develop and undertake research projects. research to improve the links between research, policy and practice.

The scholarship will cover tuition fees at the standard postgraduate host rate (£4,596 for 2022/23) plus an annual maintenance allowance of £16,062 per year (as per UKRI rate for 2022). There is an annual research training support allowance of £750 to cover conference attendance, training courses, equipment and books.
Criteria
Migrant Mental Health: experiences, perceptions and understandings of mental health and access to mental health care in Kent
The University of Kent, in conjunction with the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration Kent, Surrey, Sussex (ARC KSS), welcomes applications from a potential PhD student interested in explore beliefs, perceptions and experiences of access to mental health care from the perspective of migrant communities in the Kent region. We are looking for students who are enthusiastic about undertaking ethnographic, qualitative or mixed-methods research in one of the following areas:
- migrant mental health in kent
- first-generation migrants (i.e. born outside the UK) and their exploratory models of health and health beliefs
- asylum seekers and refugees access to mental health care
- provision of mental health care in primary care settings for non-UK population groups
- religion/spirituality interface and mental health beliefs among migrant populations in Kent
- perceptions of mental health care among ethnic minority groups in Kent
- socio-cultural understanding of mental health in settled migrant communities in Kent (e.g. Sikh community, Greek Cypriot community)
We invite research proposals addressing one or more of these broad areas, employing an innovative methodological approach, for example ethnography (participant observation), qualitative research, mixed methods research, and participatory or creative methods.
The scholarship opportunity is open to all applicants, including those with professional practice experience. Candidates must have completed postgraduate training in health sciences or social sciences at Masters level equivalent to merit or distinction.
A combination of qualifications and/or experience equivalent to a relevant UK degree may also be accepted.
Center for Health Services Studies ARC Doctoral Fellowship in Co-Production
Scholarship value
The scholarship will cover tuition fees at the standard postgraduate host rate (£4,596 for 2022/23) plus an annual maintenance allowance of £16,062 per year (as per UKRI rate for 2022). There is an annual research training support allowance of £750 to cover conference attendance, training courses, equipment and books.
Criteria
- We welcome applications from a future doctoral student interested in co-production, in particular understanding how the co-production of health and well-being can benefit health and care services. We particularly appreciate clear and succinct proposals using appropriate methodology that address understudied areas or populations.
- The scholarship opportunity is open to all applicants, including those with professional practice experience. Applicants will have completed a health-related postgraduate training course at the equivalent Master’s or Distinction level with a substantial research training component, which must include training in quantitative data analysis skills.
- A combination of qualifications and/or experience equivalent to a relevant UK degree may also be accepted.

Scholarship value
The scholarship will cover tuition fees at the standard postgraduate host rate (£4,596 for 2022/23) plus an annual maintenance allowance of £16,062 per year (as per UKRI rate for 2022). There is an annual research training support allowance of £750 to cover conference attendance, training courses, equipment and books.
Criteria
- We welcome applications from a future doctoral student interested in investigate the use of health and social services among people with long-term disease clusters, with a focus on coastal cities. We have access to a large dataset linking data from medical practices, trusts and social care organizations in Kent and Medway which can be used to explore this question.
- We are looking for students who are enthusiastic about analyzing large data sets to gain insights into health policy and practice. The scholarship opportunity is open to all applicants, including those with professional practice experience in public health.
- Applicants will have completed a health-related postgraduate training course at the equivalent Master’s or Distinction level with a substantial research training component, which must include training in quantitative data analysis skills.
- A combination of qualifications and/or experience equivalent to a relevant UK degree may also be accepted.
How to register
We will consider all applicants who have applied for the PhD in Applied Health Research before the scholarship deadline, provided that all supporting documents (including references) have been uploaded into the Kent application system (KentVision). Applicants should include a clear and succinct research proposal as part of their application.
We do not need an additional scholarship application.
